Why Plants Need Fertilizer

A planted tank is a closed system. Unlike a river or lake where nutrients enter continuously from runoff and decomposing organic matter, an aquarium relies on what you add. Light drives photosynthesis — but without the raw materials that fertilizer provides, plants cannot build new tissue regardless of how bright the light is.

The key nutrients are split into two groups. Macronutrients — nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) — are consumed in the largest quantities and drive growth rate and overall vigor. Micronutrients — iron, manganese, boron, zinc, and others — are needed in small amounts but cause visible deficiency symptoms when absent. Iron deficiency is the most common: it shows as yellowing between leaf veins while the veins remain green, a pattern called interveinal chlorosis.

Liquid Fertilizer vs Root Tabs

The delivery method determines which plants benefit. Liquid fertilizer dissolves into the water column and is absorbed through leaves and stems — this matters for stem plants, mosses, java fern, anubias, and any floating plant with no meaningful root contact with substrate. Dose after water changes, not before — adding fertilizer to water that will be removed wastes product.

Root tabs are compressed nutrient discs pressed into the substrate near a plant's root zone. They release slowly over 2–3 months and primarily benefit plants with extensive root systems: Amazon swords, cryptocorynes, vallisneria, and tiger lotus. These plants pull a significant portion of their nutrients from the substrate regardless of what is in the water column. Most established planted tanks benefit from using both methods — liquid for column feeders, root tabs for substrate feeders.

Choosing a Dosing Method

For low-tech tanks without CO₂ injection, a simple weekly liquid dose at half the label recommendation is a reliable starting point. Growth is slower without CO₂, so nutrient demand is lower — overdosing feeds algae without benefiting plants. Adjust up if plants show deficiency; adjust down if algae increases.

For high-tech tanks with CO₂ injection, the Estimative Index (EI) method is the most consistent framework: dose macros three times per week and micros on alternating days, then perform a 50% water change on Sunday to reset accumulated nutrients. EI removes the need for precise water testing by deliberately overdosing and then resetting — it keeps nutrients consistently available without building up to harmful levels.

Yellowing after fertilizing typically means one of three things: the wrong nutrient is being addressed, light is insufficient, or CO₂ is limiting in a high-tech setup. General yellowing (whole plant pales) usually indicates nitrogen or potassium deficiency. Yellow leaves with green veins (interveinal chlorosis) points to iron deficiency specifically — switch to a fertilizer with chelated iron or add a targeted iron supplement. If yellowing persists with adequate fertilization, check that your light delivers enough PAR for the plants you are keeping.
