A successful freshwater aquarium — planted or not — depends on three things in sequence: a completed nitrogen cycle, adequate and appropriate filtration, and stable water parameters. For planted tanks, filtration choice directly affects CO₂ distribution, surface agitation, and long-term water chemistry. This guide covers each layer in order, from setup through equipment selection.
Aquarium filtration is not a single process — it is three distinct mechanisms running in parallel inside the same housing. Understanding each one tells you what to prioritize when choosing and maintaining a filter.
Coarse and fine foam pads or filter floss capture uneaten food, fish waste, and plant debris before decomposition. This is the stage that needs regular maintenance — clogged mechanical media reduces flow and forces water through inefficient paths, stressing the biological stage downstream.
The most critical stage. Nitrosomonas bacteria colonize porous media and convert ammonia to nitrite; Nitrospira convert nitrite to the far less harmful nitrate. This colony should never be cleaned with tap water — chlorine kills it immediately. Rinse only in aged tank water during water changes.
Canister filters are preferred over hang-on-back (HOB) models in planted setups because they minimize surface agitation — which drives off CO₂ — while moving sufficient volume to maintain water column circulation. For CO₂-injected tanks, this difference is measurable in both plant growth rate and CO₂ consumption.

The nitrogen cycle is the single most important concept in freshwater fishkeeping. A tank that has not completed its cycle is not ready for fish — no exceptions.
The cycle begins when an ammonia source enters the water. Nitrosomonas bacteria consume ammonia and produce nitrite (NO₂), which is also acutely toxic. Nitrospira then convert nitrite to nitrate (NO₃), which accumulates slowly and is managed via water changes and plant uptake.
A fishless cycle — dosing ammonia without livestock — is the cleanest method and typically completes in 4–6 weeks at room temperature. The cycle is confirmed when both ammonia and nitrite read 0 ppm within 24 hours of dosing 2 ppm ammonia. Seeded media from a mature filter compresses this to 1–2 weeks.

A planted tank is not an aquarium with plants added. It is a system where plant growth, filtration, lighting, and CO₂ interact continuously — getting any one variable wrong affects all the others.
Plant-specific substrates (ADA Aqua Soil, Fluval Stratum) provide a rooting medium and slow-release nutrients for root-feeding species. Inert substrates work for rhizome plants and low-tech setups but require supplemental liquid fertilization. Substrate is one of the few decisions that is difficult to reverse without a full teardown — choose deliberately.
PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) delivered at substrate level determines which plants will thrive. High-light setups demand CO₂ injection and fertilization to avoid algae outbreaks. Low-light setups are more forgiving and are the correct starting point for most hobbyists entering planted tanks.
CO₂ injection is not required for all planted tanks but substantially expands the range of species that can be kept successfully. A pressurized system with a regulator, solenoid, and diffuser is the standard setup. CO₂ should match the photoperiod — running it at night wastes gas and drops pH without benefit.
