How the Nitrogen Cycle Works
Every aquarium produces ammonia continuously — from fish waste, uneaten food, and decomposing plant matter. Ammonia is acutely toxic to fish at concentrations above 0.5 ppm and lethal within hours at higher levels. The nitrogen cycle solves this problem biologically.
Two groups of bacteria establish in your filter media and substrate over time. Nitrosomonas bacteria colonize first and convert ammonia (NH₃) into nitrite (NO₂⁻). Nitrospira bacteria follow and convert nitrite into nitrate (NO₃⁻). Nitrate is far less toxic and only becomes harmful at concentrations above 40–80 ppm — manageable through regular partial water changes. The entire process is invisible but its absence is the leading cause of unexplained fish death in new tanks.
The Three Stages
Stage 1 — Ammonia spike. Ammonia climbs first. Without fish, introduce a controlled ammonia source — pure ammonia drops, a pinch of fish food, or a small piece of raw shrimp. Target 2–4 ppm to give Nitrosomonas bacteria enough food to multiply.
Stage 2 — Nitrite spike. As Nitrosomonas establish, ammonia begins falling and nitrite climbs — often sharply. Nitrite is as toxic as ammonia. This is the most dangerous phase in a fish-in cycle and the point where most losses occur without intervention. Expect nitrite to peak 2–4 weeks in.
Stage 3 — Nitrate appears, ammonia and nitrite reach zero. Nitrospira bacteria colonize and begin converting nitrite. When both ammonia and nitrite hold at 0 ppm and nitrate is detectable on a liquid test kit, the cycle is complete.
How to Run a Fishless Cycle
Fishless cycling is the recommended method — no fish are exposed to toxic parameters during the process.
Set up the tank completely: filter running, heater at 78°F, dechlorinated water.
Add pure ammonia (unscented, no surfactants) to reach 2 ppm. Fish food or raw shrimp also work but are less controlled.
Dose Seachem Prime every 48 hours if ammonia climbs above 4 ppm — it detoxifies ammonia and nitrite without disrupting the bacteria processing them.
Add Seachem Stability directly to the filter on days 1–7 to seed beneficial bacteria and reduce total cycle time.
Test every 2–3 days with a liquid test kit. Strip tests are not precise enough for cycle monitoring.
When ammonia and nitrite both hold at 0 ppm for 48 hours, add a full ammonia dose and retest at 24 hours. If both read 0, the tank is cycled.
Before adding fish, perform a 30–50% water change to reduce accumulated nitrate, then stock gradually — adding the full fish load at once can overwhelm a newly established bacterial colony.
Planted Tanks and the Nitrogen Cycle
Live plants consume ammonia and nitrate directly, which reduces the bacterial load required to maintain safe parameters. Fast-growing species like hornwort process ammonia efficiently during the early cycle stages and effectively compete with algae for the excess nutrients a cycling tank produces. A fully planted tank with active substrate cycles faster and stays more stable after completion than a bare or lightly planted setup.
