In tanks with persistent algae pressure, adding hornwort as a floating mass is a practical first measure while the underlying cause is addressed. For beginners, it is one of the most reliable entry points into planted tanks — low cost, widely available, and hard to kill.

Tank Requirements

Workable parameters: temperature 59–86°F (15–30°C), pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 5–15 dGH. Hornwort tolerates the full range, but reacts strongly to rapid change. Sudden temperature swings or large water changes with significantly different chemistry trigger needle shedding. Stability matters more than hitting precise target numbers.

On lighting: a standard aquarium LED running 8–10 hours per day is sufficient. Brighter conditions accelerate growth and require more frequent trimming. A digital timer maintaining a consistent photoperiod is the simplest algae-prevention tool in any planted setup. CO₂ supplementation is not required — hornwort performs well on ambient dissolved CO₂, which makes it genuinely suited to low-tech tanks.

Planting and Placement

Three options work equally well:

For background placement, group 5–7 stems before anchoring — individual stems look sparse. Leave 4–6 inches of clearance between hornwort and the light source to prevent it from blocking mid-ground plants. Handle it gently when adding to a new tank; it sheds needles under rough handling, and some shedding in the first week of acclimatization is normal regardless.

Growth and Maintenance

Hornwort grows 2–5 inches per week in warm water with adequate light. Weekly trimming is non-negotiable — left unchecked, it covers the surface and shades everything below. Cut stems to the desired length using curved plant scissors; any section with a node grows into a new plant. Discard excess cuttings or anchor them in a different area of the tank.

In heavily stocked tanks, dissolved organic waste provides enough nutrients without supplementation. In low-bioload setups, a weekly dose of liquid fertilizer keeps growth consistent and prevents yellowing.
