Freshwater aquarium algae falls into six main categories: green spot, hair and thread, diatoms, black beard algae, blue-green algae (cyanobacteria), and green water blooms. Each has a distinct appearance and a specific cause. Excess light duration and unbalanced nutrients are the common thread across all types — identifying the algae correctly is the first step toward effective and lasting control.
Algae and plants compete for the same resources: light, CO₂, and dissolved nutrients including ammonia, nitrate, and phosphate. When the balance tips — too much light, excess nutrients from overfeeding or infrequent water changes, or an immature nitrogen cycle producing excess ammonia — algae gains the advantage.
Most algae problems are not about the algae itself but about what the tank is offering it. A consistent photoperiod of 6 to 8 hours, regular partial water changes, and a healthy population of fast-growing plants removes most of the conditions algae depends on. Identifying the type of algae present points directly at which condition is out of balance.
Green algae is the most common category in freshwater tanks and encompasses several distinct types with different growth patterns and controls.
Green spot algae appears as hard, circular green dots pressed flat against glass and slow-growing plant leaves. It is one of the most mechanically resistant algae types — a razor blade or hard scraper removes it from glass; it will not wipe off with a cloth. GSA is most often associated with low phosphate levels, which sounds counterintuitive but reflects the algae's ability to thrive in conditions where plants struggle. Increasing the frequency of water changes or adjusting fertilization to raise phosphate to 0.5–1 ppm typically slows new growth.
Hair algae forms long, filamentous green strands that tangle around plant stems and hardscape. Thread algae is a similar but finer variant that forms a soft, almost silky coating. Both types indicate excess nutrients combined with moderate to high light — a common pattern in new planted tanks where plants are not yet established enough to consume available nutrients. Manual removal by twisting strands around a toothbrush, combined with reducing light duration by 1 to 2 hours, controls most outbreaks. Amano shrimp are highly effective grazers against both types.
Green dust algae grows as a thin, powdery film directly on glass surfaces — distinct from green spot algae in that it wipes off easily with a cloth or magnetic scraper. It tends to appear in waves, clearing between outbreaks. Reducing light intensity and duration is the primary lever; unlike spot algae, GDA does not typically indicate a specific nutrient deficiency.
Brown algae, more accurately called diatoms, coats glass, substrate, and plant leaves with a thin brown or golden film in the first 4 to 8 weeks of a new tank. Diatoms are driven by silicates leaching from substrate and tap water — a temporary condition as silicates are consumed and the tank's microbial balance establishes. They are almost always self-limiting and disappear without intervention once the silicate supply drops.
Wiping the glass, increasing water flow, and adding Otocinclus catfish — which graze diatoms efficiently from glass and plant surfaces — speeds resolution. Diatom outbreaks in established tanks usually point to a tap water source with elevated silicates or a substrate that has been disturbed and is off-gassing again.
Black beard algae is one of the most persistent types in freshwater aquariums. It grows as dense, dark tufts — ranging from grey-green to near-black — on hardscape edges, filter intakes, and the margins of slow-growing plant leaves. Unlike most green algae, it is not directly associated with excess nutrients. The primary cause is CO₂ fluctuation: inconsistent injection, low surface agitation during CO₂-off periods, or a tank running without CO₂ where dissolved CO₂ varies with light cycles.
Spot treatment with liquid carbon (Seachem Excel) applied directly via syringe turns affected areas white within 24 to 48 hours. Stabilizing CO₂ delivery and ensuring surface agitation runs at night — when plants consume oxygen instead of releasing it — prevents regrowth. Siamese algae eaters are among the few fish that actively consume BBA rather than ignoring it.
Despite its name, blue-green algae is not an algae at all — it is a cyanobacterium, a photosynthetic bacteria capable of fixing nitrogen from the water column. It appears as a slimy, bright blue-green or teal sheet that spreads across substrate, rocks, and plant leaves, often producing a faintly earthy smell. In high concentrations it can release toxins.
Cyanobacteria thrives in low-flow, nutrient-rich conditions — particularly in areas of the tank where water circulation is poor. Increasing flow directly at affected zones, performing a 3-day blackout (full tank covered, no light), and a course of erythromycin in severe cases are the standard controls. After treatment, resolving the underlying flow deficit prevents recurrence.
Green water is a free-floating single-cell algae bloom that turns tank water opaque and green. Unlike surface algae, it cannot be physically removed and does not respond to standard scraping or spot treatments. The cause is almost always a spike in dissolved nutrients combined with strong light — common after adding fertilizer to an uncycled or lightly planted tank.
A UV sterilizer clears green water reliably within 3 to 5 days by killing suspended algae cells as water passes through the unit. A 3-day blackout also works but requires removing light completely. After resolution, reducing nutrient input and increasing plant density prevents recurrence.
