Start dense — thin later

Introduce fast growers in quantity from the start rather than a few stems. Algae control through nutrient competition requires sufficient plant biomass to make a measurable difference in nutrient levels. A single Hornwort stem in a 40-gallon tank does little — a dozen stems creates a meaningful nutrient sink. You can always thin as slower foreground plants establish.

Float first, plant later

Floating fast growers (Hornwort, Anacharis, Water Sprite) produce the fastest results because their leaves access maximum light at the surface and their roots directly contact the most nutrient-rich water column. Start them floating and plant stems in substrate once algae is under control.

Trim regularly or they become the problem

Fast growers that shade the entire water column create new problems — lower plants starve for light, and dense floating mats restrict gas exchange at the surface. Trim weekly, removing the excess rather than replanting every cutting. In a high-nutrient tank, replanting all trimmings simply adds more biomass than the tank needs.
