The fastest growing aquarium plants are Hornwort, Anacharis, Water Sprite and Rotala. All four grow rapidly without CO₂ injection, absorb excess nutrients directly from the water column and outcompete algae by limiting available nitrates and phosphates. They are the most effective low-tech tool for algae prevention in any freshwater tank.
Every aquarium has a fixed supply of nitrates, phosphates and dissolved CO₂. Algae and plants compete for the same resources. When plants grow faster than algae, they consume those nutrients first — leaving algae without the fuel it needs to establish. This is the core logic behind using fast growers as an algae prevention strategy, and it works reliably in low-tech tanks where chemical algaecides are not an option.
Fast-growing species also provide three additional benefits beyond nutrient competition: oxygenation (rapid photosynthesis releases more dissolved oxygen), biological surface area for beneficial bacteria during cycling, and immediate visual density in new tanks before slower foreground plants fill in.
The trade-off is maintenance — fast growers require more frequent trimming and can become invasive if left unchecked. The four species below are ranked by growth rate and practical usefulness in community planted tanks.
Hornwort is the single fastest growing aquarium plant available to most hobbyists. It absorbs nutrients directly from the water column, requires no substrate and tolerates virtually any lighting level. In a well-lit tank with moderate nutrient levels, it can visibly elongate within 24 hours. The main management challenge is needle drop — when stressed by temperature swings or significant light changes, Hornwort sheds its fine needles, which collect in filters and substrate. Keep temperature stable and avoid dramatic light changes when first introducing it. It thrives as a floating plant or can be loosely anchored with a plant weight.
Anacharis is the classic beginner fast grower — forgiving, adaptable and effective. It grows in both tropical and coldwater tanks (65–82°F / 18–28°C), making it one of the few plants suitable for goldfish and tropical setups alike. It can be planted in substrate or left floating. Its dense whorled leaves provide excellent shelter for fry and shrimp. Trimming is straightforward: cut stems to length, remove the lower inch of leaves and replant the trimmed top — it roots readily. Sold widely under the name Elodea in some regions (though technically a different genus).
Water Sprite is a fern-like plant with delicate, lacy leaves that grows prolifically both as a floating plant and when rooted in substrate. As a floater, its roots hang into the water column and provide exceptional cover for fry and breeding fish — many killifish and betta breeders use it as a spawning medium. Rooted, it grows into a substantial mid-background plant. Its finely divided leaves also produce daughter plantlets at the tips, which can be detached and propagated freely. Water Sprite needs moderate to high light to thrive — it will grow slowly in low-light conditions but won't produce the dense, rapid growth that makes it useful for algae control.
Rotala rotundifolia is the standard fast-growing stem plant for mid-to-background planted tanks. Under moderate to high light, it produces dense stems of small rounded leaves, turning orange-pink with sufficient light and nutrients. Without CO₂ it remains green and grows more slowly, but still outpaces most algae. Trimming is the same as other stem plants: cut, remove lower leaves, replant tops. Rotala is also one of the best plants for establishing a sense of height and movement in a planted tank — its slightly curved stems create a naturalistic layering effect when planted in bunches.

Algae control through nutrient competition requires sufficient plant biomass to make a measurable difference in nutrient levels. A single Hornwort stem in a 40-gallon tank does little — a dozen stems creates a meaningful nutrient sink. You can always thin as slower foreground plants establish.
Floating fast growers (Hornwort, Anacharis, Water Sprite) produce the fastest results because their leaves access maximum light at the surface and their roots directly contact the most nutrient-rich water column. Start them floating and plant stems in substrate once algae is under control.
Fast growers that shade the entire water column create new problems — lower plants starve for light, and dense floating mats restrict gas exchange at the surface. Trim weekly, removing the excess rather than replanting every cutting. In a high-nutrient tank, replanting all trimmings simply adds more biomass than the tank needs.
Fast-growing plants perform the nutrient-competition function most effectively with a consistent 8-hour photoperiod. Longer photoperiods don't proportionally increase nutrient uptake but do give algae more light hours to grow. Keep the schedule consistent — irregular lighting is one of the fastest routes to algae in any planted tank.
