Bettas (Betta splendens) have two traits that shape every equipment decision in their tank: a labyrinth organ that lets them breathe atmospheric air at the surface, and long, delicate fins that catch on rough decor and struggle against strong current. Neither trait rules out a planted setup — if anything, live plants suit bettas better than a bare tank, since smooth leaves and soft cover reduce the stress that drives fin damage and aggression in the first place.
The practical shift from a standard planted tank is in equipment choice, not plant selection. Filtration needs to be gentler, the water surface needs to stay partly open for air access, and hardscape needs a fin-safety check before anything goes in the tank. Everything else — substrate, lighting, a basic fertilizing routine — follows the same framework as any other planted tank.

A hang-on-back filter can also work if the outflow is baffled or angled away from open swimming space, but a sponge filter needs no adjustment out of the box.
Keep enough of the water surface open and undisturbed by filter flow for the betta to reach it comfortably — labyrinth fish breathe atmospheric air periodically regardless of dissolved oxygen levels in the water, and a surface constantly churned by strong outflow makes that harder than it needs to be.
Species with broad, smooth leaves work particularly well in a betta tank — java fern and anubias are common choices, in part because bettas often rest directly on wide leaves near the surface. Floating plants add shade and reduce the sightlines that can trigger a betta into flaring at reflections or perceived rivals, which helps in tanks positioned near reflective surfaces or high foot traffic.
Substrate choice follows the same logic as any other planted tank — a nutrient-rich substrate supports root-feeding species without adding anything specific to betta care. What does change is hardscape: run a hand along every piece of driftwood or rock before adding it, and skip anything with sharp edges or unsanded surfaces. Live plants are inherently fin-safer than plastic decor, which is one of the practical reasons a planted layout suits a betta better than a bare tank with ornaments.
