Algae is a light and nutrient imbalance — not a cleaning problem. Scrubbing it off surfaces without fixing the root cause brings it back within days. The most effective approach combines a controlled photoperiod (6–8 hours), consistent water changes, and plant competition. The other methods on this page accelerate results.
Every aquarium will grow some algae. It becomes a problem when conditions tip in algae's favor: too much light, excess nutrients, or not enough plant competition to absorb what's available. Understanding which factor is driving the growth in your tank determines which fix will actually hold.
The six methods below address different root causes. Most algae problems respond to the first two alone. The others matter in specific situations — green water, black beard algae, or tanks where parameter correction alone isn't moving fast enough.
Lighting duration is the single most controllable algae variable. Aquarium plants reach their light saturation point well within 8 hours — additional light beyond that fuels algae without benefiting plants. Most algae-prone tanks are running 10 to 12-hour photoperiods by accident, often because lights were never put on a timer.
Target: 6–8 hours per day. If algae is already established, drop to 6 hours for two weeks, then gradually extend back to 8. Midday siesta schedules — lights off for 3 hours in the middle of the day — can further reduce algae pressure in persistent cases.
Intensity matters too: A high-output LED running at 100% over a low-tech tank creates the same imbalance as an overlong photoperiod. Dimming to 50–70% is often more effective than shortening the schedule.
Algae feeds on the same nutrients as plants — nitrates, phosphates, and trace elements. When nutrient levels outpace plant uptake, algae fills the gap. The two most common sources are overfeeding and infrequent water changes.
Fast-growing stem plants and floating species are the most underused algae control tool. Species like hornwort, water sprite, frogbit, and guppy grass absorb nutrients directly from the water column — the same nutrients algae needs to grow. A tank with actively growing plants has less available for algae.
The key word is actively growing. Plants that are merely surviving don't compete effectively. Healthy growth requires adequate light, consistent nutrients, and stable parameters — which are the same conditions that prevent algae in the first place.
Removing algae physically doesn't fix the root cause, but it reduces the active colony and the spores it releases. In combination with parameter correction, regular mechanical removal accelerates how quickly the tank clears. A magnetic algae scraper handles glass-surface algae during water changes without requiring hands in the tank.
Seachem Excel (liquid carbon) works as a targeted treatment for black beard algae, hair algae, and staghorn — types that resist parameter correction alone. The method: during a water change, turn off circulation, draw undiluted Excel into a syringe or pipette, and apply directly onto affected areas. Leave for 10–15 minutes before restoring flow. Repeat every other day for two to three weeks.
It is not a substitute for fixing light and nutrients, but it accelerates clearance of established colonies that won't recede on their own.
Green water — a suspended algae bloom that turns the water opaque — does not respond to parameter correction quickly enough to be practical. A UV sterilizer eliminates the suspended algae cells as water passes through it, typically clearing green water within 3 to 5 days. It has no effect on algae already attached to surfaces.
