Bettas are tropical fish originating from warm, still waters in Southeast Asia. They need a stable temperature between 76-82°F (24-28°C) — most homes, especially at night or in air-conditioned rooms, run cooler than that. A betta kept in unheated water becomes lethargic, eats less, and is measurably more vulnerable to fin rot and other diseases, even in otherwise clean water. Skipping a heater is one of the most common — and most preventable — mistakes in betta care.
A practical rule of thumb: budget 3-5 watts per gallon of water. A 5-gallon tank needs roughly 25 watts, a 10-gallon needs 25-50 watts, and larger tanks scale up from there. Undersizing means the heater struggles to hold temperature in a cold room; oversizing in a small tank increases the risk of overshoot if the internal thermostat is imprecise, which is common on budget models.
A heater only warms the water immediately around it — circulation does the rest of the work. Placing the heater near the filter outflow or another area with steady water movement spreads heat evenly through the tank. A heater in a dead corner with no flow can produce a warm pocket near the unit while the rest of the tank runs cooler, even with an accurate thermostat.
Bettas often rest against warm surfaces, which puts them in direct contact with the heater if it lacks a full protective guard. Choose a heater with a built-in guard, or add a separate clip-on guard if the unit doesn't include one. This is a more common issue with lower-cost heaters than with mid-range models designed with betta and small-fish keepers in mind.
Never rely on a heater's built-in dial to confirm actual water temperature — dials are frequently inaccurate by a few degrees in either direction. A separate stick-on or digital thermometer, checked daily for the first week after installing a new heater and periodically afterward, is the only reliable way to catch a heater that has failed stuck-on (overheating) or stuck-off (no heat).
